摘要 <p>Process for smelting nickel metal from nickel oxide by reduction melting in an electric arc furnace, characterized in that: - introduced into said furnace are NiO, a carbon-based material and oxides intended to form a synthetic slag, the composition of which is chosen from: * Al2O3: from 25 to 45%; CaO: from 30 to 60%; MgO: from 0 to 20%; SiO2: from 0 to 15%, the content of other oxides not exceeding 5%; * CaO: from 20 to 40%; MgO: from 10 to 40%; SiO2: from 35 to 65%, the content of other oxides not exceeding 5%; said composition having to be maintained within these limits throughout the entire duration of the smelting, and a reduction melting of the NiO is carried out in order to convert it into liquid Ni metal; - an addition of Si is carried out which makes it possible to continue the reduction of NiO present in the slag and, optionally, to carry out a desulphurization of the Ni metal; - a chemical equilibrium between the metal and the slag is achieved which enables the drops of Ni metal present in the slag to settle in the liquid bath, over a duration of at least 10 minutes, and optionally, the Ni metal to undergo a desulphurization; - a partial skimming of the slag is carried out; - and the liquid Ni metal is cast outside of the furnace.</p>
