The invention relates to a method for operating a driver assistance system (12) of a motor vehicle (10), comprising the following steps: detecting a viewing direction (18) of a driver of the motor vehicle (10); determining an intention of the driver (14) to change lanes on the basis of the detected viewing direction (18); operating the driver assistance system (12) while taking into account the determined intention to change lanes; wherein on the basis of the detected viewing direction (18), it is determined whether the driver (14) has turned his view toward particular specified mirrors (20, 22, 24) of the motor vehicle (10) in accordance with a first predetermined sequence or in accordance with a second predetermined sequence; if it has been determined that the driver has turned his view in accordance with the first predetermined sequence, an intention to change lanes to the left is determined; if it has been determined that the driver has turned his view in accordance with the second predetermined sequence, an intention to change lanes to the right is determined.
