PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character recognition apparatus capable of accurately recognizing a character from an image obtained by imaging an area including the character even if the area is shadowed.SOLUTION: A character recognition apparatus comprises: a histogram generation unit 22 generating a histogram of luminance values of pixels within a predetermined area including a character on an image; a division unit 23 dividing the histogram into a plurality of bells of the histogram; a binary image generation unit 24 classifying the bells of the histogram into either a first or second group while changing combinations, and defining each pixel having a luminance value corresponding to the bells of the histogram in the first group as a first pixel value among the pixels within the predetermined area, and each pixel having a luminance value corresponding to the bells of the histogram in the second group as a second pixel value, thereby generating a plurality of binary images of the predetermined area; and a recognition unit 25 detecting characters shown in each binary image, obtaining a probability of each character, and determining the character having the highest probability as the character included in the predetermined area. |
