Provided are a portable terminal for providing a function, which can be performed by the portable terminal, to a user by using information input into the portable terminal, and a method for operating the same. The method for operating the portable terminal comprises the steps of: receiving a touch input in a state where a touch sensor of the portable terminal is activated and a display of a touch screen is deactivated, determining an operation of the portable terminal corresponding to the received touch input, and executing the determined operation according to the activation of the display.
