This technology pertains to a data generation device, a data generation method, a data reproduction device, and a data reproduction method that make it possible to make use of high dynamic range (HDR) images. Data in a markup language is generated, said data containing an HDR storage element that stores, as an element of said markup language, HDR information comprising the following: characteristics information that indicates HDR-image luminance characteristics, HDR images having higher dynamic ranges than standard (STD) images; and conversion information that indicates conversion rules for converting an STD image to an HDR image or vice versa. This technology can be applied, for example, when applying HDR information to subtitles in the SMPTE-TT format, which uses XML. |
