The method involves subjecting the measuring signal (7a) of the gas sensor (2a) to the two filter operations to detect the test pattern occurring during the test. An alarm signal and/or signal is discharged to confirm a positive test, upon detection of this test pattern. The predetermined sequence of high and low concentrations or intensities of the first test medium, is generated. A second test medium is discharged after delivery of the first test medium to displace the first test medium. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) an alarm unit; and (2) a test device for testing alarm unit.
