The application relates to a liquid crystal cell, and a usage thereof. The liquid crystal cell of an example can realize the bi-stable mode of switching between a haze mode and a non-haze mode with a low driving voltage. The liquid crystal cell can be applied to various optical modulation devices such as a smart window, a protective film for a window, a flexible display device, an active retarder for displaying 3D images, or a view angle control film. The liquid crystal cell of the present invention includes two substrates aligned to face each other and a liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer exists between the two substrates aligned to face each other. The liquid crystal includes a liquid crystal compound and an ionic compound. The liquid crystal compound is a liquid crystal compound exhibiting a smectic liquid crystal phase. The ionic compound is an ionic compound possibly causing electrohydrodynamic instability (EHDI). |
