<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for automatic observation and counting of cells without using any dye liquid or fluorescent material. <P>SOLUTION: A system is provided with an optical microscope having a sensor that supplies electric signals representing a field of view. The microscope is electrically driven so that the focus can be automatically varied. A sample of cells to be analyzed is made ready. No dye liquid or fluorescent material is used. When the microscope is operated intentionally in an out-of-focus state, the cells look like having either bright spots or dark spots that can be used for reporting the number of cells in the sample. An image analyzing software, such as Cell Profiler, is used for identifying the cell shape by utilizing luminous energy variations detected in images acquired on different focal planes.
