Method of manufacturing a solid hollow metal component whose internal surface is partially spherical and includes an open end, and tool for the implementation of the method. Firstly, a blank is manufactured, formed by a substantially cylindrical hollow body 1 on the inner wall of which are provided grooves 4 and slots 6, which are uniformly spaced and alternating, extending axially along the generatrices of the inner volume. Next the open end of the blank is narrowed down by exerting an axial thrust on the inside of the said blank by means of a shaped mandrel whose head includes retractable sectors 25 separated by slits 26 placed opposite the slots 6 of the blank. Application to the production of the external element of constant-velocity universal joints. <IMAGE>
