An electrical generator has a rectifier and an alternator comprising plural elements that extend radially outwards from an axis and include an element 10 having plural magnets and two elements 20 each comprising plural coils. The coil elements are positioned on opposite sides of the magnetic elements in a direction of the axis and relative rotation between the magnetic element and the coil elements produces a multi-phase alternating voltage by electromagnetic induction in the coils. The two coil elements are mounted with a fixed angular offset (fig 5, 28) relative to each other giving a constant phase shift between the multiphase alternating voltages output from each of the coil elements. There can be two magnetic elements forming a rotor and three coil elements forming a stator. Each magnet can be mounted in an aperture (fig 13) facing outwards axially and overlapping with the coils. The coil elements may each produce a three phase voltage that is fed through rectifiers connected in series (fig 22) or in parallel (fig 23) and feed an inverter producing an AC output. The angular offset between the two stators may be chosen to minimise ripple in a voltage input to the inverter. |
