PURPOSE:To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of preventing the light emission of the high pressure side end part of a discharge lamp after extinguishment of the discharge lamp and performing a smooth lighting operation having no waiting time. CONSTITUTION:A preheating current is regularly supplied from the preheating winding of a power source transformer T3 to each filament of a discharge lamp D1. A circuit consisting of a resistor R5 and the relay contact ry1 of a relay Ry1 is inter in series between a commercial power source AC and a diode bridge DB1. When the discharge lamp DL1 is lighted, the contact ry1 is switched on the full line side to set the voltage to be added to the discharge lamp DL1 to a normal value, and when the discharge lamp DL1 is extinguished, the contact ry1 is switched on the broken line side to set the voltage to be added to the discharge lamp DL1 lower than the normal value.
