The present invention relates to a head mount display device and an operating method thereof. The operating method of the head mount display device according to an embodiment of the invention comprises: displaying a predetermined image on a display; turning on a shutter unit, when a distance between an outer object and the head mount display device is within a predetermined range or a predetermined sound received from outside is repeated; and turning off the display. According to the present invention, convenience of use for a user can be improved.
