PURPOSE:To reduce the power consumption of a telephone set by illuminating an operation button and a display device for a prescribed time only when the surrounding luminous intensity is less than the brightness that affects the operation of the telephone set when the operation button is pushed. CONSTITUTION:A portable telephone set or a radio communication equipment is provided with a surrounding luminous intensity measuring means 6. The means 6 detects the surrounding luminous intensity when an operation button 1 is operated and sends this measured intensity to a control means 5. The means 5 actuates an operation button illuminator 2 and a display illuminator 4 for a prescribed time when the luminous intensity is less than the reference brightness that affects the operation of the telephone set or the communication equipment. Meanwhile both illuminators 2 and 4 are not actuated as long as the brightness is satisfactory for operation of the telephone set or the communication equipment. Therefore, the power consumption of a build-in buttery is reduced.
