PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for optimal encoding of subtitle or subpicture layers for high-resolution video.SOLUTION: There is provided a run-length encoding method consisting of four steps. The second or third shortest code words are used for shorter or longer sequences of pixels of a prescribed color (transparent). The shortest code words are used for single pixels having individual color values. The third or fourth shortest code words are used for shorter or longer sequences of pixels of the same color value.
