Provided is a vehicle control device in which an index is determined that acquires a greater value when at least forward acceleration produced in a vehicle in the forward direction is increased, the index thus indicating that the driver is seeking a travel with quicker vehicle behavior, and in which vehicle control characteristics are set or modified to characteristics matching the travel sought by the driver on the basis of the index. In the vehicle control device, weighting is performed such that the value of the index is increasingly decreased so as to suppress the quickness of behavior of the vehicle and to facilitate constant travel when the absolute value of the instantaneous acceleration of either: instantaneous forward acceleration in the forward direction based on at least an accelerator operation which is determined repeatedly during vehicle travel; instantaneous forward/rearward acceleration based on the accelerator operation and a brake operation; or instantaneous combined acceleration of the instantaneous forward/rearward acceleration and instantaneous lateral acceleration based on a steering wheel operation, is smaller than a predetermined value set in advance and becomes closer to zero (steps S1 to S5).
