A process for producing a metal oxide powder, wherein a) a stream I comprising at least one hydrolysable metal compound in vapour form, b) a stream II comprising oxygen and c) a stream III comprising at least one combustion gas are reacted, with d) stream I being introduced into stream II or vice versa to produce stream IV via a feed point provided in a pipe section A comprising one or more static mixing elements, followed by e) stream III being introduced into stream IV to produce stream V via a feed point provided in a pipe section B comprising one or more static mixing elements, f) the stream V leaving the pipe section B being introduced into a reaction chamber, where it is ignited and reacted in a flame, with g) the resulting solid being isolated.
