PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent having excellent photo-aligning property and a voltage retention rate and giving excellent contrast and afterimage characteristics. ! SOLUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent comprises at least one polymer selected from a polyamic acid having a structure expressed by formula (1) shown below as a main chain and an imidized polymer of the polyamic acid. In the formula (1), two of X each independently represent a divalent saturated aliphatic group or a divalent unsaturated aliphatic group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms; two of Y each independently represent a single bond, an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, an ester bond or a thioester bond; R represents a methylene group or an alkylene group having 2 to 12 carbon atoms which may be interrupted by an oxygen atom; and '*' represents a bond. !
