A first network entity is capable of communicating over a plurality of communication links with a second network entity using a two-way timestamp exchange protocol. The first network entity comprises one or more line card modules for interfacing with the plurality of communication links. A controller module comprising a two-way timestamp exchange protocol port is mapped with a shadow port on a said line card module, such that the first network entity is configured for a two-way timestamp exchange with the second network entity via a said shadow port.
