An observation method that comprises a first observation step for observing a subject to be observed and a second observation step for observing the subject on the basis of data obtained in the first observation step, wherein the first observation step involves a step for detecting the state of cells included in an observation area and the second observation step involves a step for determining whether or not the cells are to be observed depending on the cell state detected in the first observation step. In the aforesaid observation method, the first observation step may involve a step for judging whether or not the cells included in the observation area are in a definite state and the second observation step may involve a step for determining whether or not the observation area is to be observed depending on the number of the cells having been judged as being in the definite state or the ratio of these cells to the number of the cells in the observation area.
