PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress protein aggregation without impairing protein characteristics by reaction of a cyclic polysaccharide with the reactive groups on the surface of a protein to modify the surface with the cyclic polysaccharide to effect improving the solubility of the protein in its aqueous solution. SOLUTION: A cyclic polysaccharide such as a cyclodextrin [e.g.α- cyclodextrin (α-CyD),β-cyclodextrin (β-CyD),γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CyD)] is reacted, by e.g. dialdehyde method, with the reactive groups such as lysine residues or amino groups as N-terminated residues on the surface of a water-soluble protein (e.g. Escherichia coli ribonuclease HI) to modify the protein surface with the cyclic polysaccharide to effect improving the solubility of the protein in its aqueous solution, thus suppressing protein aggregation without impairing protein characteristics, with increase in the ratio I/Io not observable (I is the measurement with time of the scattered light intensity for an aqueous solution of the protein; Io is the initial value), leading to substantial improvement in the protein's medical and engineering applicability.
