A wear plate system 100 comprises a wear indicating apparatus 10 and a wear plate 30 mounted to a wall 40. The wear plate 30 has a hole 32 defined therein which extends from a non-wearing side of the wear plate to a reflective surface at a terminating end of the hole. The wear plate 30 has a predetermined thickness measured between the reflective surface and a wear side 28 of the wear plate. The wear indicating apparatus 10 includes a light generator which generates light directed at the reflective surface in along a first optical path 16. A light sensor senses reflected light along a second optical path 14. When light is reflected from the reflective surface so as to be sensed by the light sensor, it indicates that the reflective surface is intact and as such the wear plate has not as yet worn down to the reflective surface.
