The invention relates to a method for recognising an engaged gear ratio R of the manual gearbox of a motor vehicle provided with a heat engine and a binary gear engagement sensor. The recognition of a gear ratio uses the binary information indicating the state of engagement, and the estimation of a gear ratio. The method allows said information to be synchronised in order to reliably recognise an engaged gear ratio. The invention also relates to a device for implementing said method as well as to a motor vehicle provided with such a device.
