A dye-receiving element for thermal dye transfer has a support carrying on one side, in order, (i) a cushion layer of an acrylic polymer, (ii) a subbing layer and (iii) a polymeric dye image-receiving layer. The subbing layer is a poly(vinyl acetal) and is present at a coverage of at least 0.17 g/m2. Also claimed is (1) a thermal dye transfer assembly having (a) a dye-donor element with a support carrying a layer contg. dye dispersed in a binder and (b) the above receiving element, and (2) a method of forming a dye transfer image involving heating the dye-donor element imagewise and transferring the dye image to the receiving element.
