Enemy helicopter detection and destruction method

The method uses an IR search head (10), with an IR optical system (13), directing incident IR radiation onto an IR sensor, provided by a matrix detector (14) with point detector elements (15). The amplitude and frequency of the resulting electrical signals are evaluated for identifying the helicopter type and controlling a missile fired against the helicopter (16). The matrix detector is periodically pivoted about an axis parallel to the flight direction during a target region scanning phase and is stabilised upon target detection, for a subsequent target identification phase.
