DETACHABLE BUTTRESS MATERIAL RETENTION SYSTEMS FOR USE WITH A SURGICAL STAPLING DEVICE A method of applying buttress material (24, 26) to a surgical staple line. The method comprising the steps of providing a surgical stapler (10) having a pair of jaws (16) including a staple containing cartridge (22) and an anvil (20), the surgical stapler (10) having a buttress material (24, 26) releasably disposed on at least one of the pair of jaws (16) and a plurality of retainers (28, 30) extending transversely across the buttress material (24, 26) and passing through the buttress material (24, 26) and into recesses formed in the at least one of the pair of jaws (16); and actuating the surgical stapler (10) to drive staples from the staple containing cartridge (22). |
