A coolant injection controller 10 for a fuel cell system 1 is configured to actively control the flow of a coolant to a fuel cell assembly 2 for cooling and/or hydrating the fuel cell assembly 2 in response to a measure of fuel cell assembly performance. The measure of fuel cell performance may comprise one or more options selected from: (a) electrical output of the fuel cell assembly 2; (b) temperature of cathode fluid flow, anode fluid flow or coolant; (c) minimum fuel cell voltage of one or more fuel cells within the fuel cell assembly 2; (d) standard deviation in fuel cell voltage of a plurality of fuel cells that form the fuel cell assembly; and (e) rate of change in minimum fuel cell voltage of one or more fuel cells within the fuel cell assembly 2. A fuel cell system, computer program and method using said controller 10 are also disclosed. This allows dynamic control and regulation of the coolant flow according to requirements, using measurements taken directly from the fuel cell assembly 2. |
