The aim of the invention is to recover heavy metals from the residue of a plant for the partial oxidation of oils. To this end, the heavy metal-containing soot produced during the partial oxidation of the oil in the primary oil gasifier is separated from the other substances produced, and thermally decomposed together with residues, whereby the heavy metals occur in their own phase either in oxidised or metallic form. According to the invention, the separated heavy metal-containing soot may be thermally decomposed in a metal melting bath or in a soot gasifier.
