The invention concerns the use as thickeners for preparing surfactants of hydroxycarboxylic acid esters obtained by reacting in known manner hydroxycarboxylic acids selected from the group comprising tartaric acid, malic acid and citric acid with fatty alcohol polyglycolethers of formula (I) R<1>O(CH2CH2O)nH in which R<1> stands for a C6-C22 alkyl and/or alkenyl group, and n stands for numbers between 20 and 150.
