Method of manufacturing a hydraulic hammer using a male gauge (10) and a female gauge (8) wherein the hammer comprises a body (2) and a chuck housing (5) that are connectable by means of cooperatively formed thread fittings. In particular, the method uses a cooperatively threaded male gauge (10) and female gauge (8) to form the threads on the body (2) and the chuck housing (5) and to determine the rotational orientation of the body (2) and the chuck housing (5) relative to one another. One of the male gauge (10) and the female gauge (8) is used to measure distortion of the chuck housing (5) caused by heat treatment subsequent to the formation of the thread fitting and thereby to determine the required subsequent machining of the chuck housing (5) necessary to retain the appropriate relative rotational orientation when the chuck housing (5) is connected to the body (2).
