A system 100 for detecting the proximity of a mobile object 200 to a motor vehicle has a first object device 202 for mounting at or towards a first end of the mobile object. The first object device has a first wireless communication means and a magnometer that provides a bearing for the object. A second object device 204 is provided for mounting at or towards a second end of the object 200, and includes a second wireless communication means. The system has an in-vehicle device 102, first distance control circuitry and second distance control circuitry. The in-vehicle device has a vehicle wireless communication means 104 and a magnometer that provides a bearing for the in-vehicle device. Location control circuitry is configured to determine a location for the object relative to the in-vehicle device 102 and proximity control circuitry is configured to provide a proximity indication based on the location of the object relative to the in-vehicle device. The in-vehicle device may include a display screen or a heads-up display, and an icon representing the mobile object may only be displayed when the distance between the object and in-vehicle device is less than a minimum distance. |
