PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical material having a long life, good photosensitivity of refractive index distribution formation and high response speed, a process for producing such optical material, a phase conjugation mirror formed by using such optical material and optical device for embodying the photorefractive effect of an optical amplifier, etc. SOLUTION: The optical material contains strontium barium niobate which contains elements of at least one kind among transition metallic elements exclusive of strontium, barium, niobium and cerium and the cerium as impurities and has an electrooptic effect. For example, the phase conjugation mirror is constituted by using such optical material. When plane waves 30 pass phase disturbing objects 31, the phases thereof are disturbed and waves 32 disturbed in wave fronts are made incident on the phase conjugation mirrors 34 and reflected waves 36 inverted in the phases are passed again through the phase disturbing objects 31 in a backward path, by which the disturbance is negated. Even if the disturbance in the wave fronts fluctuates rapidly at the time the waves return to the original plane wave 30, the follow up to this fluctuation is possible. |
