Method and device for creating stable and tuneable quasi monoenergetic electron beam

A device and a method for creating high-energy electrons (30) is disclosed. A laser system produces laser pulses with a pulse length shorter than 1000 fs (femtoseconds) and capable to be focused to peak intensities greater than 10^17 W/cm^2 (watts per centimeter squared). At least one target device (28) with an interaction zone is arranged to be exposed to laser pulses. Using delivery optics at least a first laser pulse (16) and a second laser pulse (18) which both are produced by the laser system (10) are guided to the at least one target device (28) in such a way that the at least first laser pulse (16) and second laser pulse (18) at least partially overlap in the interaction zone (28) of the target device thereby releasing high-energy electrons (30) from the interaction zone. The peak energy of the electrons can be controlled by changing the delay between the first and the second laser pulses and/or the target device location.
