A two-wire communication protocol engine (40) manages control and data transmissions in a bi-directional, multi-node bus system (10) where each node (12(n)) is connected over a twisted wire pair bus (14) to another node. Some embodiments include a state machine (100) that allows for synchronized updates of configuration data across the system, a distributed interrupt system, a synchronization pattern based on data coding used in the system, and data scrambling applied to a portion of the data transmitted over the twisted wire pair bus (14). The multi-node bus system comprises a master node (12(1)) and a plurality of slave nodes (12(2)-12(N)). The slave nodes (12(2)-12(N)) can be powered over the twisted wire pair bus.
