<p>A method for activation of magnesium silicate minerals by conversion to magnesium hydroxide for sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) comprises heating a dry solid-solid mixture of magnesium silicate material with an alkali metal compound at a temperature below 300°C in an unpressurized vessel for less than 4 hours to form a solid product predominantly comprising a mixture of magnesium hydroxide and alkali metal silicate, and a subsequent dissolution of the solid product in aqueous solution to form an alkaline aqueous liquid slurry, comprising solid and aqueous phase products. The magnesium silicate preferably comprises naturally occurring Olivine or Serpentine mineral. The magnesium hydroxide may be used to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce a metal carbonate.</p> |
