PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear actuator which has simple structure and is lightweight in spite of being large-sized, and furthermore has sufficient strength, and to provide a screw rod. SOLUTION: The linear actuator includes: a screw rod comprising a shaft in a predetermined length and a spiral cord wound on the shaft to form a screw thread; and a piece having a female screw formed therein that can screw with the screw rod. The actuator can linearly move the screw rod or the piece forward and backward by rotating the screw rod or the piece around the axis. In another embodiment, the screw rod comprises a shaft body in a predetermined length and a spiral cord wound on the screw shaft to form a screw thread, the shaft body is formed into cylindrical and worked to form a spiral groove on the outer circumference of the shaft body at the same pitch as that of the spiral cord, and the spiral cord is wound on the rod in such a manner that the spiral cord as laid in the spiral groove protrudes to a predetermined height.
