Nucleic acid analogs (I) consisting of 3'-deoxypentopyranosyl nucleosides are new. Nucleic acid analogs (I) consisting of 3'-deoxypentopyranosyl nucleosides of formula (Ia) or (Ib) are new: R<1>, R<1>' = H, OH, Br, Cl, 6-(p-nitrophenoxycarbonyl)hexanoyloxy, 3-carboxylpropionyloxy, -O-P(N(iPr)2)(OCH2CH2CN) or -O-P(H)(O)(O<->); R<2>-R<4> = H, NR<5>R<6>, OR<7>, SR<8>, =O, CnH2n+1, beta -eliminatable groups (especially 2-cyanoethoxy or 2-p-nitrophenylethoxy), fluorenylmethoxycarbony (Fmoc) or (CnH2n)NR<10>R<11>; n = 1-12; R<10>, R<11> = H or 1-12C alkyl; or R<10>+R<11> = a group of formula (i); R<12>-R<15> = H, OR<7>, CnH2n+1 or CnH2n-1; R<5>-R<8> = H, CnH2n+1, CnH2n-1 or COR<9>; R<9> = optionally substituted alkyl or aryl; X, Y, Z, X' = N, CR<16> or NR<17>; R<16>, R<17> = H, CnH2n+1 or (CnH2n)NR<10>R<11>; Q = H, acyl, trityl or a photolabile protecting group; R<2>'-R<4>' = H, =O, CnH2n+1, CnH2n-1 beta -eliminatable groups (especially 2-cyanoethoxy or 2-p-nitrophenylethoxy), Fmoc or (CnH2n)NR<10>R<11>. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a process for preparing (I); (2) a conjugate comprising (I) and a biomolecule; (3) a diagnostic agent and/or electronic component containing the conjugate.
