A method of scheduling a diagnostic event 70 is disclosed in which a prediction 30 of the future operation of the motor vehicle is used to determine when to execute the diagnostic event 70. In the situation where alternative diagnostic techniques are available the method further comprises selecting the most suitable diagnostic technique based upon the prediction of future use.
