PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent high temperature hot water from being delivered even upon failure of a bypass control valve. SOLUTION: When the 'full open' positional signal of a bypass control valve 8 is not detected during extra firing operation, extra firing is inhibited and a gas proportional valve fixes extra firing at a predetermined level such that the temperature of a hot water supply heat exchanger 7 decreases below a predetermined level. The gas proportional valve also controls extra firing to a predetermined level by the signal from a heat exchanger delivery hot water temperature sensor 19 such that the temperature of the hot water supply heat exchanger 7 decreases below a predetermined level. According to the arrangement, high temperature hot water is prevented from being delivered from a hot water faucet even upon failure of the bypass control valve 8.
