A system for uniformly spacing particles in an open, flowing system comprising: a) an elongated cavity filled with a flowing fluid and further comprising suspended particles; b) a transducer acoustically and communicably linked to said cavity wherein said transducer vibrates to create an axial acoustic standing wave field, and wherein said axial acoustic standing wave field results in substantially uniformly spaced nodes and anti-nodes along the flow axis of said cavity; and wherein said axial acoustic standing wave field drives a single particle to a substantially uniformly spaced node or antinode along the center axis of said cavity.
