This invention relates generally to a therapeutic use of alkaline phosphatase to reduce or inhibit toxic effects associated with a bacterial infection in a subject.

1. A method of reducing or inhibiting toxic inflammatory effects of a bacterial infection in a subject undergoing a surgical procedure on the peritoneal cavity, the method comprising:
selecting a subject having the bacterial infection in the peritoneal cavity; and locally irrigating the infected peritoneal cavity with a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of an alkaline phosphatase, wherein the irrigation reduces or inhibits the inflammation caused by the bacterial infection in the peritoneal cavity of said subject.
