A method of computer-assisted modeling of a blood vessel in a 3D image, comprising: a. isolating a blood vessel segment from the remaining vasculature present in the image; b. mapping the surface of the isolated blood vessel segment onto a standardized parametric space, a pathological condition of the isolated blood vessel segment being identifiable through surface-attached variables and quantities of the isolated blood vessel segment transformed by the mapping; and c. generating a mapped representation of the isolated blood vessel segment from the results of the mapping, wherein the mapping step comprises generating a mapping transformation that is applied to the isolated blood vessel segment to transfer the surface of the segment to the standardized parametric space, wherein the mapping transformation is expressed in the mathematical form of: φ:V→T, where φ is a mapping function and V is the surface of the vessel segment to be mapped to the template T of the standardized parametric space, wherein the mapping transformation is homeomorphic.
