A heterogeneous catalyst comprising an organic catalytic group coupled to a mesocellular siliceous foam support, said catalyst additionally having alkylsilyl groups or one or more chiral modifiers or both and said chiral modifier(s) being different to the catalytic group, wherein the catalytic group is capable of catalysing a reaction selected from the group consisting of a Friedel-Craft reaction and a Diels-Alder reaction and wherein the catalytic group is coupled to the support by a linker group comprising an attachment group for attaching the linker group to the support and a spacer group which couples the attachment group to the catalytic group, wherein the spacer group is selected from the group consisting of —(CH2)4—O—C6H4—CH2— and —(CH2)2—O—(CH2)4—, and wherein the catalyst is made by coupling a reagent comprising the organic catalytic group and the linker group to silanols on the mesocellular siliceous foam support, said support having the alkylsilyl groups or one or more chiral modifiers or both coupled thereto prior to said coupling of said reagent to said silanols.
