Microfluidic sieve valves

Sieve valves for use in microfluidic device are provided. The valves are useful for impeding the flow of particles, such as chromatography beads or cells, in a microfluidic channel while allowing liquid solution to pass through the valve. The valves find particular use in making microfluidic chromatography modules.

1. A microfluidic device comprising two sieve valves and a channel or chamber, wherein a chromatographic separation medium is disposed within the channel or chamber between the sieve valves, thereby forming a separation column, wherein each of said sieve valves is paired with a conventional valve,
wherein, when actuated, the conventional valve blocks flow of solution past the conventional valve, and wherein, when actuated, the sieve valve allows flow of solution but blocks passage of the chromatographic separation medium past the sieve valve.
