An apparatus and a method for protecting a battery are disclosed. A battery protecting apparatus according to the present invention comprises: a sensing unit which senses an overcharge state or an overdischarge state of a battery; a plurality of switches which are installed on a charging path and a discharging path of the battery; a control unit which controls the switches such that the battery is charged and discharged, when the battery is neither overcharged nor overdischarged, and controls the switches such that the battery is only discharged, when overcharged, or charged, when overdischarged, by an output signal of the sensing unit; and a display unit which displays a charging state or a discharging state of the battery. |
