The present invention relates to an object detection device (16) for a vehicle to monitor the surroundings of the rear of a vehicle. The object detection device (16) has a radar sensor (18) to generate a radar signal containing information about a distance between the vehicle and a vehicle user (50), or a distance between the vehicle and another object around the rear of the vehicle. The radar sensor (18) is designed to mount on vehicle components (7, 8, 9, 12, 14) pointing toward the surroundings of the rear of the vehicle. Furthermore, the object detection device (16) includes a control and evaluation unit (20). The control and evaluation unit is designed to detect a movement pattern of a vehicle user (50) using the radar signal, to compare the movement pattern with a predefined reference pattern, and to actuate a servomotor (3) arranged on a rear gate (2) of the vehicle to control the rear gate between an open position (5) and a closed position (4) when the movement pattern corresponds to the reference pattern.
