PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing monolayer carbon nanotubes with enhanced production efficiency, monolayer carbon nanotubes obtained by the method and useful for a microsemiconductor, microcapsules, a micromachine, or the like, and to obtain a porous starting material used in the method. SOLUTION: Energy is supplied to the porous starting material comprising a metal and carbon to obtain the monolayer carbon nanotubes.
