In this method for reducing carbon dioxide, a device for reducing carbon dioxide, the device having a cathode tank (302) for holding a first electrolyte (307) containing carbon dioxide, an anode tank (305) for holding a second electrolyte (308), a solid electrolyte membrane (306), a light-condensing unit (313), a cathode electrode (301) having on the surface thereof a metal or a metal oxide, and an anode electrode (304) having a region comprising a nitride semiconductor layer in which are layered a GaN layer and an AlxGa1-xN layer. Using the light-condensing section (313), the anode electrode (304) is irradiated with light obtained by condensing light having a wavelength of 360 nm or less, and carbon dioxide contained in the first electrolyte (307) is reduced on the cathode electrode (301).
