A method of converting a feedstock comprising oxygenates to olefins comprising: providing the feedstock to an oxygenate to olefins conversion reactor; heating the feedstock to a temperature sufficient to form a protective layer of carbonaceous material on at least one of the metal surfaces in the reaction zone; subsequently contacting the feedstock with a molecular sieve catalyst at oxygenate to olefin conversion conditions; removing and separating olefins from the reactor; detecting damage to or defects in the protective layer; and repairing the protective layer by forming additional carbonaceous material where the damage or defects are located.
