The purpose of this invention is to provide an approaching-object detection system that detects approaching objects as early as possible. Said approaching-object detection system, which detects approaching objects on the basis of taken images taken by an imaging device, is characterized by having the following: an extraction unit that extracts a partial image from one side of a taken image and a partial image from the other side of said taken image; a distortion correction unit that corrects distortion in the partial images extracted by the extraction unit; an object detection unit that references set object image information and uses pattern matching to detect objects from the aforementioned partial images, the distortion in which was corrected by the distortion correction unit; and an approaching-object identification unit that identifies approaching objects on the basis of detection results from the object detection unit.
