摘要 <p>The invention relates to a secondary cell based on a copper, manganese and sulfate electrolytic fluid, with the potential for spectator iron ions to be available to recycle copper or manganese dioxide which becomes disconnected from the electrodes; carbon electrodes for use in such a cell; and a battery employing such cells configured in series or parallel and a power system in which excess power from the system is stored in the batteries either for resale to the power grid at peak demand or, in the case of a wind power system, use during low wind conditions. The positive and negative electrodes may be conductive carbon electrodes. While the energy density, long term storage and other characteristics of the copper manganese chemistry are not preferred in other applications, they are uniquely suited to large scale industrial power storage due to the very low cost of the materials in industrial quantities and the fact that the environmental risk of sulfuric acid, copper, manganese and iron are well understood and relatively inexpensive to manage. Electrodes formed of calcined petroleum coke chip compressed about a carbon plug show improved performance at a given cost over other carbon electrodes.</p>
